 (Un)fair trade

Trading project

Aim: To consider various aspects of trading. You will need: Paper, pens, a group of people. Duration: 45 minutes

Work in groups of four or five. The challenge for each group is to draw up a fictional business plan for selling a product. You can use your imagination and be as ambitious as you like. At the end you will present your plans to the rest of the group, so you might like to spend some time drawing pictures of your product, graphs to explain your costs and profits, results of any customer surveys etc.

Consider these questions:

  • What would you sell (product)?
  • Who would you sell to (customers)?
  • Is there a demand for this product?
  • How much would it cost to produce?
  • Who will make the product?
  • Would you need to borrow money?
  • How much will you charge for the product?
  • Will you make a profit?
  • How will the profit be shared out?

Present your plans to the rest of the group. Were there any similarities between your ideas? Did you come across any problems? How do you think your company compared to companies in real life?
