 Democracy

Circle time

Aim: To introduce the concept of democracy to younger children.
You will need: A group of people.
Duration: 15 minutes

Introduce a discussion about democracy with younger children. These are some suggested questions to ask:

  • Who tells you what you can and cannot do?
  • What if you don't agree with what they tell you?
  • Do your parents ever ask for your opinions?
  • Do you have a chance to say what you think about your school? Is that right?
  • Who runs the country? How are they chosen?
  • What can people do if they don't agree with what politicians do?

Explain that a democracy is when people have all have a chance to vote for their representatives. This means everyone has a chance to express their views. If people do not agree with the way people in power are doing things they can try to bring about changes by demonstrating and talking to them.
