Labels and logos

Aim: To think about our exposure to corporations all around us.
You will need: Old magazines and packaging with logos to cut up, paper to stick items on, glue.
Duration: 30 minutes

Think about all the different labels and logos we see around us - on advertisement posters, on the television, on the side of buses, on products in the shops, in magazines and so on. Different companies make different products, and then try to convince us that their product is best - by using exciting packaging, striking colours, and eye-catching names.

Make a collage of different logos and labels. Cut them out of packaging and adverts, and stick them on a piece of paper in an interesting design.

Talk about these questions:

  • Do you recognise the brand labels?
  • Are you surprised by how many labels you can find?
  • Does your family always buy products from a particular company? (e.g. a particular brand of toothpaste or brand of margarine.)
  • Do you think companies like having loyal customers?
  • Is it important which brand you buy, or is price the most important thing?
