Making a difference
Aim:
To find out about ways people can make a difference through campaigning.
You will need:
A speaker from a campaign/lobby organisation.
Duration:
1 hour
Many people try to bring about change through campaigning. They may be dissatisfied with the way governments are behaving or with things corporations are doing. Usually a campaign is targeted on a particular issue, with concrete demands that are being made. Campaigns are most effective when lots of people get behind an issue, to show governments, corporations etc that many people are in agreement about the problem.
Invite a speaker from a campaigning organisation on human rights/the environment/children's rights etc. Choose an issue that the group is most interested in.
Ask the speaker to talk about how their organisation tries to bring about change and what successes they have had. How do they decide what to campaign about? How do they find out information about the issues? How do they get people involved? If you are interested you could ask how you can get involved yourself.
