Aim:
To introduce the concept of prejudice to younger children.
You will need:
A group of people.
Duration:
15 minutes
Introduce a discussion about prejudice with younger children. These are some suggested questions to ask:
- Have you ever thought someone was better, just because they were a boy/ or a girl?
- Do you sometimes make judgements about people because of what they look like?
- Are people who come from the same country are all similar?
- Have you ever heard someone say something that was prejudiced? What did you do?
- Why do some people have prejudiced feelings?
- How can we change people's prejudiced ideas?
Explain that prejudice means when we jump to a conclusion about someone without having proper information. Prejudiced ideas may lead people to discriminate against others, which means treating them badly. If we find out more about other people, and are open and tolerant of differences we can overcome our prejudices.
