Chain of waste
Aim:
To understand where waste comes from and how to reduce it.
You will need:
Long piece of paper (e.g. old roll of wallpaper), pens etc to draw with.
Duration:
45 minutes
Use a long piece of paper. On it you will draw the chain of your household waste. In the middle of the strip draw your home, with examples of the goods you consume. Next fill in the stages either side. Before goods get to your house they are grown or made, packaged, transported and sold. After you dispose of your waste, rubbish may be collected to go to a rubbish tip, it may be burnt, or some if it may be recycled.
Look at your finished chain and think about how you could reduce your waste. Can you identify different places along the chain where changes need to be made to cut down on waste? Whose responsibility is it to reduce the amount of waste we produce?
Now try to put some of your suggestions into practice at home.
