Five in five
Aim:
To empathise with people who are evicted from their slum houses.
You will need:
A group of people.
Duration:
20 minutes
Many people in poorer countries live in poor quality housing on the edge of cities, known as slums. They are unable to afford to live in a decent house. They have to make do with very basic facilities, and they live in constant threat of eviction. This is because these houses are usually built on land which is owned by someone else. People may come with bulldozers to knock down the flimsy houses and evict the residents from the land.
Imagine you have been told you have five minutes to get out of your house before it will be knocked down. What five items would you take with you? If you are working in a group with other people, discuss your reasons for choosing those five items.
Do you think poor people being evicted from slum house would have the same priorities as you? Do you think they would take any items that are different? Why? Discuss how you would feel if you were evicted from your house.
