 Sustainability

Starting with me

In rich countries we are guilty of throwing away huge amounts of 'rubbish' which could be reused. Many items can have a new life, if we use a bit of imagination.
Think of a creative use for:

  • an old car tyre
  • an old oil drum
  • broken elastic bands
  • bark from a tree
  • unwanted cardboard boxes
  • unwanted wooden palettes
  • ripped clothes
  • a broken umbrella
  • a bucket with a hole in the bottom

If you cannot make it useful, can you make art out of it?
There are lots of ways we can reduce our impact on the environment by living more sustainably. Here are a few suggestions. You can tell people your own suggestions by sending them to the Global Village website.

  • Protect trees by only using recycled paper, or reusing old paper by writing on the back.
  • Save energy by turning off electric lights when you leave a room.
  • Encourage your family to walk on short journeys, rather than using the car.
  • Recycle your glass bottles, or return them to the shop if they are collected for reuse.

See the sustainability campaign page to find out about taking action to reduce your energy use.
