 (Un)fair trade

Circle time

Aim: To introduce the concept of Fairtrade to younger children.
You will need: A group of people.
Duration: 15 minutes

Introduce a discussion about trade with younger children. These are some suggested questions to ask to get everyone talking:

  • Do you like going to the shops or market?
  • When was the last time you bought something? What did you buy?
  • What was the last thing you bought that came from another country?
  • Can you name some of the things and foods we import from other countries?
  • Why do we buy goods from other countries?
  • Have you ever bought something directly from a farmer?

Explain that often farmers in poor country are not paid a fair price for their goods. Instead it is the companies selling things that make a big profit. But it is possible to buy some goods that are 'fairtrade' which mean the farmer has been paid a fair price.
