 (Un)fair trade

Fair trade stall

Aim: To sell Fairtrade goods and raise awareness about Fairtrade.
You will need: Fairtrade goods to sell, a place to hold a stall, people to run the stall.
Duration: Preparation time and time to run the stall.

You could hold a stall selling Fairtrade goods, to raise awareness about Fairtrade, and maybe also raise some money. This may give some people a chance to buy and try Fairtrade goods for the first time.

Before you start you will need to:
- research what products are available and where they can be bought
- research what people would want to buy and what would be most popular
- research if people are willing to pay a little bit more for something that is fairly traded
You could ask people informally or create a short questionnaire of a few questions.

You will also need to consider:
Where will you hold the stall, and who do you need permission from?
Who will help to run the stall?
When will it be open?
Do you have somewhere safe to store the products?

A few tips:

  • Try to get a few adults to help
  • Try to get sponsors to donate money to pay for your initial stock of goods
  • Start with simple things such as snacks and drinks.
  • Use posters to advertise your stall, and spread information about Fairtrade.
  • If there is any way to 'announce' the fairtrade shop, use it, such as an information sheet or school assembly

Organise a simple system to look after the money you take. After every period of selling add up what you have sold and check the money you have received. Keep the accounts up to date, writing down the total money taken and list of what has been sold.

You could donate the money you have raised to a Fairtrade organisation, or you could use it to fund other awareness raising activities.
