 (Un)fair trade

Fairtrade coaster

Aim: To raise awareness about Fairtrade.
You will need: Materials for coaster (e.g. very thick card/small tiles/sheets of cork/squares of wood), suitable materials for design (e.g. pens/paints).
Duration: 1 hour

Make a gift for a friend or relative to remind the person using it of the importance of Fairtrade. Every time they have a cup of tea or coffee they will see the Fairtrade message and be reminded of the importance of paying a fair price for their tea or coffee.

Think about the materials you have that you will be able to use. If you are using card, it would be good to cover it with sticky-backed plastic to protect the coaster from moisture. If you are using wood or tiles, you will need to find suitable hardwearing paint that will not wash off.

Think about your design, and plan it out on paper first. Think about a good phrase or slogan to write on the mat. You might want to use one of these points as part of your message. Remember to make it snappy and memorable.

  • Fairtrade coffee/tea tastes great.
  • The producers and growers of Fairtrade tea and coffee get paid enough to feed their families.
  • Remember the hard work of the coffee and tea farmers when you are relaxing.
  • Paying just a little bit more for fairtrade drinks means farmers can afford to send their children to school.

Give your coaster to someone as a gift, and explain to them what Fairtrade is all about.
