 Water and health

Health booklet

Aim: To convey basic health and hygiene messages.
You will need: Folded paper, pens, coloured pens.pencils.
Duration: 45 minutes

Start by having a discussion about basic advice for keeping safe and healthy. Some starting points for discussion:

  • Hand washing
  • Keeping clean
  • Brushing teeth
  • Avoiding injuries
  • Healthy eating
  • Exercise

Point out that it is much easier for people to keep clean and prevent illness when they have a good supply of water. Not everyone in the world has access to clean water, so even if they understand about good hygiene, it is not always possible.

Next people can work in pairs or small groups to produce a booklet aimed at younger children. They should include a selection of health and hygiene tips, with illustrations to make them clear. Make sure the 'tips' are appropriate to your environment. When the booklets are completed you could give them out to younger children.

Extra option

You could arrange to run a session for younger children based on your booklet. Contact a primary school or youth group to ask if they would like to have a session on health and hygiene.
