Programme Preview: About the Programme
Sam McGeever & Elle Dodd
In September 2000, the worlds' leaders signed up to am abitious set ofgoals that they hoped would be met by 2015. These targets, the Millenium Develeopment Goals (or MDGs) have formed the basis of the programme here at Global Village.
There are ten different theme centres, dotted around thepavillions, marquees and tents that make up our site. Volunteers havebeen working in each centre for over a year now to bring you anaction-packed programme of workshops, seminars, games, speakers andcreative sessions that focus on their theme.
The different themes have each written a short introduction with thehighlights of what will be going in the centre.
If you'd like to find out more, turn to page 7 where you can see the programme listings detailing everything that's going on around Global Village, or just pop into visit any of the centres, they'll be happy to see you!
The Goals
When they were agreed in 2000, almost 190 countries signed up to support the Millenium Develeopment Goals.
They aim to encourage the international community; governments, national and international organisations - as well as ordinary people like you and me - to stop talking about making a difference in the developing world and join forces to start doing something productive.
Within each broad goal, there are more specific targets which outline exactly what should have happened and by when.
The original hope was that almost every one of these specific targets would have been met by 2015.
Unfortunately, the latest figures suggest while some progress is being made towards meeting them, in many cases progress is has been inconsistent, slow, or nonexistent.
That's why we all need to get involved with the exciting themes here at Global Village so we can learn how to make a difference!
