Thieves target Global Village
James Robson V2 with Nadia Franklin & Neela Wimmor V14
Some time between late Sunday night and the early hours of Monday morning, a wave of thefts hit Global Village.
Many different things were stolen, including phones, iPods, rucksacks, wallets, washbags & money.
Items were stolen in Villages 8, 12 and 13, in Golden Monkey Town, and in the Staff Village.
As well as the thefts, some acts of vandalism were also reporting.
A car was dented and the Adult Tent has been slashed down one side with something sharp.
The items were stolen from tent porches, and some people have said that they can vaguely remember someone coming into the outside of their tent just before the sun came up.
There is a stile and a footpath nearby, so it is possible someone came from outside.
However, when the police were called, they gave their professional opinion that it was more likely to be someone inside the camp, said Zoe Waterman, a member of the GV06 Steering Committee.
The police were called at 11 yesterday by Zoe, following three hours of reports of theft. If anyone has anything else to report to her, go to the main GV06 office as soon as possible.
If it was someone from off site, this highlights the need to wear wristbands, Zoe said.
You should wear your wristbands at all times, and if anyone else arrives to camp the first thing they should do is to go to the infomation Centre, by the Fairytrade cafe, and register.
“It's really important we can tell who is legitmately on site, for the sake of people's property, and for the safety of everyone, especially the children, who are on camp.”
In villages 12 and 13, residents said that credit cards, car keys, money and mobile phones were taken. Keys belonging to one of the victims, Andy, were found dropped between the two villages.
Andy said he was a little bit upset, but these things happen. The items not of value to the thief were scattered across the area. Roger, from village 12, said that the thief took a light from his tent, apparently to look for things in other tents.
