Water Waste!
Christian Halliwell, V14
Village 9 have been enjoying a refreshing dip in a mammoth size paddling pool placed in the centre of their village. Is this really sustainable?. Where is this water coming from? Is it going to be re-used and recycled? If so how? Also, with there being a water shortage in the camp area, Kent, is it wise to be filling a pool up with water?
I decided to walk down to the village and ask a few questions about the pool. When asked about the source of the water I was told that there is a quota of 'water play' that a village is offered, so they decided to use their whole quota of 'water play' in this pool.
Contrary to this statement, the camp office told me that there wasn't a water quota, only that they were discouraging people from misusing and wasting water.
The pool is not just exclusive to the village, it is available for booking. There is a minimal charge of 10p per person. The money raised will be used to help fund a water project in India. The village are actively looking to help others, which is positive. However, maybe they could have found a more sustainable way of fundraising. However 'fun' this idea may seem, is the 'fun' generated by the pool enough to justify the negative impact on the Earth? I'll let you decide for yourself...
