Pass for Peace Final rained off: Tournament declared a tie
Pass for Peace Team
It seems an age ago when forty teams began this tournament with high hopes and brave hearts.
Since the opening match a week ago, Pass For Peace has produced some scintillating football and bonded new friendships at the same time. As the numbers of teams thinned, Pass For Peace has really proved to be the surprise hit of Global Village 2006, surpassing some of the more recognised programmes in terms of numbers of participants and levels of enjoyment.
Daytime Programme Co-ordinator, Elle Dodd, hailed the tournament as a huge success: “It has really brought together the different nationalities within the villages and my hat goes off to the organisers for putting in the hard work and effort a project like this requires.”
Sunday brought with it beautiful sunshine and large crowds to the games area that hosted the Town versus Town stage of the tournament.
Group A consisted of V34 of Blue Whale, V12 of Golden Monkey and V35 of Indigo Snake while Group B was made up of V6 of Red Wolf, V27 of Green Turtle and V14 of Yellow Parrot. The teams would play both other teams in their group and the team at the top of the table would qualify for the final the next day.
Group A produced no wins so the group was decided on penalties between V34 and V35 due to them scoring more goals in their matches than unlucky V12. After a lenghty and tense shoot-out, V34 eventually succeeded in securing a place in the grand final.
Group B was altogether more straightforward with V6 winning both their matches, 4 - 0 against V27 and 1 - 0 against V14 and therefore grabbing the second place in the final. V27 did manage to defeat V14 2 - 1 but found no way past the organised V6.
Unfortunately, there was be a huge anti-climax to the Pass For Peace tournament when the gods decided to open the heavens and drench the Pass For Peace finals pitch. There was much disappointment all round when the final of the tournament between V6 and V34 had to be called off due to unsafe conditions.
Therefore, it is our final decision that in the spirit of Global Village co-operation and friendship, that both V34 and V6 be declared joint champions!
Congratulations to both teams who can take a lot of pride and satisfaction from their achievement. Congratulations are also in order for V5 who have won the fair play award for their impeccable enthusiasm and village spirit.
Your Pass For Peace team would also like to thank every village who took part in the tournament. Tillyards Coffee, the Fairytrade Café, Folk Supply, the Craft Centre, Lloyd Russell-Moyle and last but definitely not least, all the guys at the Media Centre. Without all your help Pass For Peace could not have taken place. We hope you have all enjoyed yourselves as much as we have!
